Cortijo La Torrera has pleasure in announcing their association with the
horse riding school "Vera Cruz" to provide a new experience for those
seeking excitement, adventure, great horse riding and a taste of the real
Spain. Due to the culmination of careful planning and organisation, we are
now able to offer traditional Spanish accommodation in Cortijo La Torrera
and horse riding, organised by Fidel and Caterina of "Vera Cruz", on the
tracks and trails of the lower Alpujarras mountains.
Over the years Fidel has cultivated many interesting routes, all of them off road and mostly through the mountains and hillsides of the lower Alpujarras. The rides take you through pine forests, olive and almond groves and through the farmlands of this fertile area. The longer rides will take you amongst the cork forests of Sierra Lujar, up to heights of 1300m above sea level almost as high as Ben Nevis in Scotland.
There is very little in the way of traffic, except the occasional farm
vehicle or tractor and the odd mountain biker, but usually only herds of sheep or goats. As there is little or no traffic to attend, it gives the rider a great opportunity of concentrating on the ride and the pleasures of the scenery and vistas available and smells of the surrounding countryside.
Of course as the riding stable is 10 kms from the sea, there are also opportunities to ride down to the coast so that the rider may enjoy a cantor or gallop along the sea's edge (not available in the summer season (July/August). We have available eight horses, all Spanish Andalusian/Arab reared (see photos) and are trained in the English/Spanish format to suite all riders. All the horses are totally accustomed to riding the local terrain whether mountainous or flat. The riders' experience will be matched according to the horse.
We have horses to suit the beginner or novice rider and for those with more experience. A day's riding is normally of 5-6 hours duration depending on the group and their wishes. This is after all, your holiday. So if you don't wish to ride all day, but take time out to relax or sunbathe then that's fine. There is a stop for a lunch break, which usually is at midday and takes place in one of the local bars or restaurants that can be found in the mountain villages en route. This gives the rider a chance to sample "tapas" or local Spanish wine - an absolute must on a visit to the area. Fidel will be able to advise or translate if you need his help, or why not practice your own Spanish! On at least one of the days rides, Fidel & Caterina will prepare lunch using vegetables & salad grown in his own market garden, and will find a place for a picnic or campfire BBQ in a picturesque location where you can relax and eat "al fresco".

"Thank you both for your wonderful hospityality. We feel very fortunate to
have stayed at La Torrera on our first trip to Spain. We really enjoyed
riding the horses. Fidel has done a great job with the horses and setting
up the rides. we enjoyed the lovely scenery and the great food. This has
been a great taste of the real Spain for a family who hasn't been before.
The food and hospitlaity were outstanding."

"I am already dreading arriving back in the U.K, but at least I'll have
amazing memories of great hospitality, wonderful food, and of course Fidel
and the beautiful horses. Think of a gallop across the beach and all the
stress of London living will disappear. A really big thank you to you all".

FAQ |
Q: Do you cater for vegetarians?
A: Yes, but we would like to have prior notice.
Q: Will I have long to wait at the airport?
A: No, we check the arrival time of your flight and your driver will meet
you in the arrivals lounge.
Q: How far is the riding school from the cortijo?
A: The riding school is only a 20-25 minute drive from the cortijo and
takes in some of the local scenery.
Q: Do we need to hire a car?
A: No, you will be met at the airport. But any non-riders in the party may
find it an advantage to have a hire car. A discount will be given if you
decide to hire a car.
Q: What is the typical lifestyle of the area?
A: It is basically an agricultural region with fishing and market
gardening (greenhouse cultivation)providing the main source of income. This part of Andalucia
together with the Province of Almeria is known as the vegetable garden of
Europe. This is due to the fact that the Costa Tropical has the finest
climate in Europe.
Q: What is a typical day like?
A: There is not a typical day. Each day's riding is different with its
routes and tracks, so allowing the rider to enjoy to the maximum.
Q: Do you need to be an experienced horse rider?
A: No. All horses will be matched according to the experience of the
rider. No matter of weight, height or riders ability. All we suggest is
comfortable clothes for riding with boots and riding hat if you have one.
Q: Is there a guide?
A: Yes, Fidel who has been living and riding in this area for over 13
years, and knows all the routes and tracks. He also speaks Spanish,
English and German.
Q: Do you cater for non-riders?
A: Yes, any non-riders are welcome, and can relax around the cortijo or
maybe try some walking or other activities.
Q: Are you open all year round?
A: Yes, the climate of the Costa Tropical is the best in Europe. Even
winter is very similar to an English summer. (July and August are not
recommended for the high temperatures).
Q: Do you own your horses?
A: All our horses are owned by the Vera Cruz riding stables.
Q: Other companies do beach rides, do you?
A: Yes, but not in July or August the summer season, for obvious reasons.
Q: Do I have to bring my own hard hat?
A: It would be advised if you prefer to ride with one, as they are not
supplied.
Q: What clothes are best for riding?
A: Jeans, jodhpurs, and short boots. In winter a light jacket is
advisable, as when you get up in the mountains the temperature can drop a
few degrees.
Q: Do you go at a "walk" all day?
A: No, we go at all paces. After all our horses enjoy a cantor and a
gallop as much as you do!
Q:Do you have any sightseeing or day excursions?
A:Yes, these can be arranged or advice given on your arrival. There's
plenty to see and do if you fancy a days break from horse riding.
